Maintenance Tips To Increase Your Door Lock Longevity

Quality well functioning door locks are a good idea, if you want to keep your family and possessions safe from hazards & potential intruders. Most homeowners don’t understand that locks need proper maintenance just like every other household mechanical system. No matter what kind of security locks you’ve got in your house, by sticking to these below mentioned tips – by our locksmith in Scottsdale AZ – you can ensure that every single door in your home is running at its peak state for many years to come.

Keep your locks clean & well-lubricated:

Not many people know that door locks should be cleaned & lubricated periodically. Lubricate your pin or wafer tumbler locks with a dry graphite lubricant. Spray the lubricant inside the lock & move the key inside and outside it several times to eliminate any excess. You can use a wet rag to wipe down your door locks every now & then to take off the dust that can build up on them. Kwikset recommends using a dry cotton cloth to polish a cleaned lock with. We don’t suggest you use any other type of cleaner rather than a mild detergent, as it can ruin the finish of the lock as well as damage its configuration. Keyless door locks, electronic locks and biometric locks generally come with precise cleaning methods, so ensure they are cleaned  as per their specifications. At Cave Creek Lock we like to use a teflon grease on the insides of many lock mechanisms. Properly greased with no side or end bolt pressure even the cheapest lock can last for many years. We are experts at adjusting your locks so they’ll work as good as new, even when they are aged

Make duplicate keys:

When you install a brand new lock, save one of the original keys to make duplicates. Keys generally undergo wear & tear before lock systems do, and typically key replacements are warranted – but when your key wears out, its structure can change and when a worn key is copied, the new key may not work as well with your lock, as it should. To get a truly well functioning key, it’s best to have an unused  extra copy of the original to make duplicates from.

Hang & align your door properly:

If your door is aligned inappropriately, its lock won’t activate fully, or may not work at all. Minor misalignment indoor hanging is difficult to find out. But even the minutest misalignment can be exaggerated when the lock experiences warping, pressure and mechanical deformation. If the door is sagging or binding, it can place excessive pressure on your lock, and ultimately creates problems that can thwart you getting into or exiting your house via that door. It is important that the gap between the door frame & the door are consistently even, all through the outskirts of the door and is less than one-fourth of an inch wide. We can easily adjust your strike to ensure that your lock lines up correctly, which will keep them operating smoothly. If not correctly adjusted, some locks will eventually fail to open, which can create a serious life or death hazard in your home or business
